Port St. Lucie's Floresta Drive Roundabout: A Unique Opportunity for Artists to Shape Community Identity
Dated: October 18 2023
Are you an artist looking to make a lasting impact on a community? The City of Port St. Lucie has an incredible opportunity for you. A new roundabout is being constructed near Floresta Elementary School, and the city is inviting artists to submit their qualifications for designing a large-scale, site-specific artwork. This is more than just a public art project; it's a chance to become a part of the city's cultural fabric.
## Why This Project Matters
The new roundabout isn't just about improving traffic flow; it's about enhancing the community's identity. The artwork will serve as a landmark on Floresta Drive and will be thematically connected to Floresta Elementary School's dolphin mascot. This is a unique opportunity for artists to create work that resonates with both the local community and visitors alike.
## Who Can Apply?
The city is looking for individual artists or artist teams capable of conceptualizing and executing a project of this scale. The selected artist(s) will work closely with a Project Team comprising city representatives, project designers, and community leaders.
## Selection Criteria Explained
### Artistic Excellence
Your work should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also have transformative and distinctive qualities that set it apart.
### Contextual Relevance
The artwork should complement the surrounding architecture, local history, and the community's ethos.
### Community Engagement
Selected artists will be expected to lead community engagement sessions to introduce their proposed artwork.
### Durability and Safety
The artwork must be durable, resistant to weather conditions, and safe for public interaction.
### Technical Feasibility
Artists need to provide evidence of their ability to complete the project as proposed, within the given timelines and budgets.
### Past Performance
The Selection Committee will review the artist's past contracts to ensure reliability and capability.
## What's Expected from the Selected Artist?
- High artistic quality
- Site-appropriate design
- Use of durable materials
- Minimal maintenance requirements
- Resistance to vandalism
- Alignment with project goals
## How to Apply
Interested artists should convert all application materials into a PDF and email them to Josh Lapp at Designing Local ([firstname.lastname@example.org](mailto:email@example.com)) by November 6, 5 p.m. EST. File sharing platforms like Dropbox and Google Drive can be used for large PDFs. There is no submission fee for this project.
